TRAINEESHIPS

What is a traineeship?

A traineeship is a learning pathway that combines paid on-the-job training and formal study with a Registered Training Organisation. This combination of theoretical and hands-on experience equips you with practical skills and a formal qualification in your chosen vocation.

Who is eligible?

Traineeships are available for people of all ages (part-time or full-time) including high school students from Year 10 (school-based).

Why choose a traineeship?
  • Earn while you learn

  • Gain a nationally recognised qualification

  • Can be a pathway to further study or even to start your own business

  • Offers great job prospects

  • Kick start your career

  • Improve your confidence

SCHOOL-BASED TRAINEESHIPS

School-based traineeships allow high school students from year 10 to work for an employer and gain a nationally recognised qualification while studying for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

How does it work?

Students continue to attend school as usual, however, some of their paid employment and/or training will become part of their school timetable. The traineeship must impact on the student's school timetable to be considered school-based.

Employers are required to provide the student with a minimum of 375 hours (50 days) of paid employment over each 12 month period of the training contract, an average of 7.5 hours per week as a minimum.

As the training organisation, we will work with the parties to develop a training plan which outlines training needs, how and when the training will take place, who will provide the training, and how the training will be assessed.

User Choice funding is available for eligible students and covers the cost of the qualification. Find out more here.

FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME TRAINEESHIPS

New or existing workers may be employed in a traineeship in full-time or part-time employment. Trainees gain paid hands-on experience while working towards a nationally-recognised qualification.

How does it work?

Employers work with their trainee and training organisation to negotiate a training plan, outlining the training needs, how and when the training will take place and how it will be assessed.

Full-time trainees work and train an average of 38 hours per week. Part-time trainees are rostered to work and train on a regular basis for no less than 15 hours per week, averaged over four weeks.
